The Silver Bayonet - Solo Mission 1: The Wolf Pack

So this past weekend was the Easter weekend in the UK, and with the sun shining in between trips out I thought I'd finally get this solo campaign on the way for Silver Bayonet.

As I mentioned previously my narrative will be based in the early months of the invasion of Russia during 1812. So expect French Bandits, Deserters and a French Warband down the line!

I have tried to push the boat out more when it comes to board setups and definitely breaking mats up with Lichen and rocks creates a real seamless feel. I was very happy with the setup for the first scenario.

So with that said, lets explain what our brave Russian Adventurers will be facing today as they venture into the woods....

Two weeks ago, a specialist unit was sent in search of a lost chapel, deep in the forest. They never returned. Now, your unit has been dispatched to find the missing unit, or to learn their fate, and to see if you can locate the lost chapel yourselves. If the missing unit is located, it is imperative that their orders be recovered, so that they don’t fall into enemy hands.

Following the trail of the previous unit proved no trouble at all, as they left obvious tracks, and there has been little rain to wash them away. For three days, you follow their trail into the ever-deepening gloom of the dark woods. Then, near dusk on the third day, you come upon a scene of carnage. It appears you have found the missing unit; however, before you can confirm this, you hear a bone-tingling howl from nearby and suddenly bright eyes are staring at you from the shadows all around.

Our Warband consists of the following:

Officer - Grigori Miroslav (Great Faith, Strong)
Senior Officer - Pavel Glebov (Inspiring)
Champion of Faith - Father Dimitry Sokolov
Light Cavalryman - Koldan Zhukov
Grenadier - Tikhon Kuznetsov
Oleg Emsky - Infantryman
Rostislav Feneko - Infantryman
Fedot Vlasov - Infantryman

I won't bother listing their Equipment, this can be referenced from the book anyway and I'll try fit it in the narrative wherever possible.

If you go down to the woods today...

You'll probably find a Werewolf

Another view from the North side

Our Interpid Russian Warband

The woods surround them on all sides

The Wolves howl and danger draws close

The clues all laid out ready to be investigated

Beady eyes glare through the undergrowth at Human flesh

Koldan Zhukov our Cossack Raider locates the first clue

And finds a Silver Knife, perfect for cutting down Werewolves

Rostislav Feneko takes up position, aims and fires felling a Dark Wolf

Oleg Emsky of the 19th Jaegers scouts another clue and finds the missing orders!

The missing orders!

Unfortunately there is a rather grizzly beast waiting in the undergrowth..

The Dark Wolves are on the move

Musket shots ring out all around

Pavel Glebov investigates a clue and walks straight into a unfriendly figure, managing to wound it.

Grigori Miroslav heads south after spotting some clues

Wolves descend upon Koldan Zhukov

Silver shot is loaded but misses its mark on the prowling Werewolf

Pavel Glebov backs away and fires at his hairy opponent but misses

Koldan is attacked by the oncoming Wolves

And fells one!

Dark Wolves nearly overwhelm the East flank but are beaten back

The Jaegers practiced aim finally hits his mark

More hungry predators show up

Another clue scouted by Grigori, moving in the direction of his Cossack friend

Hungry for flesh the Werewolf moves in

Koldan falls to a lucky blow and passes unconscious

Our brave Grenadier is finally overwhelmed

Pavel gets a mauling from the Werewolf

These Russians better hope their faith holds!

Rostislav decides he would rather live another day and bolts!

Our plucky Jaeger also makes a break for it, realizing he must secure the missing plans

Unfortunately for Rostislav he is closely followed by hungry Wolves

Our Priest attempts to outrun the Werewolf and finds himself corned

Grigori gets some payback for Koldan and kills the remaining Wolf near him

Poor Rostislav, he couldn't quite make it

Grigori makes a quick assessment of the situation

Nope, bugger that!

Well that didn't go too well!

I did manage to score XP for locating the Missing Plans, killing the required amount of Dark Wolves and for scouting enough clues. Unfortunately, I didn't get any for the Werewolves which would have been nice considering the circumstances.

What went wrong?

I think I split my forces too much and really underestimated the staying power of Werewolves with their Quick Heal ability. The dice gods definitely didn't help with both my Grenadier and Light Cavalryman going down to lucky hits, when they were initially winning those fights handily. I probably needed to keep my Officer also in the center and let another Infantryman scout the South clues, as he was best equipped to tackle with the Werewolves in melee.

The after action injury table also didn't go in my favor...

Both my Junior Officer and Infantryman perished and became Wolf food. I can replace the Infantryman easy enough but I think Pavel Glebov will be sitting out the rest of the campaign. Lets just say the dice didn't think it was his time to shine. My Grenadier and other Infantryman also suffered permanent injury's (-1 HP) for my Grenadier and (-1 to Shoot) for the latter. I could replace them, but honestly its a short campaign at four missions so lets see if they can survive the whole ordeal. They should consider themselves lucky they are still alive.

I'll be uploading pictures also from my game with a Friend where we have just tackled scenario 2 in a later post. Excitingly Salute is this weekend so I am looking forward to stocking up on Silver Bayonet, mainly monsters for some of the later missions!

Dark Wolves and Werewolves for Silver Bayonet

Very quick post on the completed Dark Wolves and Werewolves for the first solo mission of Silver Bayonet. I'm going to work through the missions and paint up the monsters for each so I'll have most of the options avaliable for the random creature event table.

These are incredibly cheap models from Northstar, £7.50 for 5 but the quality is not that fantastic. With that said after a few trials I think these have come out fairly decent. They are very basic tabletop but they do blend with my Werewolves at least. They will die in droves anyway and probably spend more time off the table than on, so I'm not too precious.

Ready to chew on some Russians!

Thats another load to add to the painted list, and with that March over. Next will be the Vampires and some Revenants, but I'll be uploading the start of my Silver Bayonet Campaign this week.

I do plan on doing a French Warband also soon, as mentioned previously I'm keeping the context of this campaign during Russia in 1812.

Cheers

More Silver Bayonet Progress

Some more small progress this month, but the hobby mojo is back at least.

I've been chipping away at my Russians and I am nearly there with all the painted unit profiles/options I want avaliable. In other news, I finally found a decent paint scheme for the wolves (as average as the sculpts are). Expect those to come up in the next day or so. This means I can finally play the first solo mission for Silver Bayonet and I'm looking forward to it. One of my resolutions this year was to play more games, so I'm eagerly pushing on with the painting queue.

I've also got the Vampires nearly base coated and ready for shading. I'll need to pick up some Revenants also for Mission 2, but will likely see if they have any at Salute in a couple of weeks.

From left to right: Rifleman (Painted as Russo-German Legion), Cuirassier, Supernatural Investigator, Infantryman.

Some WIP Vampires, suitably Russian looking

Will push another update out tommorrow regarding the finished Wolves/Werewolves. Expect a few Battle reports within the next 1-2 weeks!

As always thanks for reading.

Quick March Update for Silver Bayonet

Been a few weeks so I thought I'd get a post up.

I feel like its been unproductive, but its been a mish mash of waiting for models to arrive and trying some new schemes for models. Although I didn't get a lot painted I'm nearly at a point where I can game and get some Battle Reports up.

Primarily I've been focused on Silver Bayonet and have started painting up the monsters for a solo campaign. Also had on order various bits and bobs for terrain, which I definitely have enough to start now.

Some werewolves for Mission 1 of the Campaign, quite happy with how they turned out.

Pavlov Grenadier

Some cool Napoleonic cards and tokens for the game system.

Picked up some Northstar Russians as its the same Sculptor for Silver Bayonet. These can be good for Infantrymen.

I've also started work on some Russian themed Vampires and Revenants for mission 2 of the rulebook.

Salute is nearly here also, so I'm purging a load of models/projects that never got off the ground (looking at my AWI collection still sat in boxes). In other news I've been slowly becoming interested in the War of 1812, it seems a real niche between AWI and ACW. With that said the focus on small skirmishes/Naval combats and some really unique Napoleonic uniforms is proving interesting. There is some really good resources and books coming out for this recently. Something to consider for the latter half of the year perhaps, as the Napoleonic bug has still not gone away.

Silver Bayonet Beginnings

So what have we been up too?

I'm putting the final touches on my Russian Sharp Practice list, literally small details here and there but the overall models are done. Been at it for 3+ months, time to move onto something else as I can always come back. I'll be hopefully getting a game up for this soon on a scenario we've been play testing.

Finally moved onto some Silver Bayonet and had a hell of a time painting these models. Absolutely gorgeous chunky sculpts, big details, just a real pleasure to paint. I am very happy how these came out. Silver Bayonet is ticking all the boxes for me currently:

  • Small model count/entry point
  • Solo/Coop or Multiplayer narrative gaming
  • Napoleonic's + Horror = Cool

I've really been wanting to do a Retreat from Moscow project at some point, but snow based projects are a bit of a risky en-devour.

1. Models look awful on any other board if they are snow based
2. Can't decide between Perry/Front Rank models for here

With that said a Silver Bayonet campaign during this setting would be amazing. French Deserters/Russian Partisans and big nasty monsters. Sounds absolutely great. Northstar also have their "Muskets and Tomahawks" models which is the same sculptor for the Silver Bayonet warbands. Lets just say, this is definitely a possibility as a project later this year.

I'm particularly interested also in the War of 1812, and setting a Silver Bayonet project in this period also. Plenty of thoughts to ponder on!

Some photos of my Russian Warband accompanied by their Don Cossack officer, and the first of our test games.

Expect lots more of these soon as I'm plowing through more on my desk!
